Turning a cheap flight into a full holiday

A cheap flight can quickly become an expensive holiday if the hotel, bags and transfers eat the saving. A little order helps.

In this order

• Book the flight first. Cheap fares go; hotels rarely sell out overnight.
• Check what luggage is included before adding bags, and add them online rather than at the airport.
• Choose a hotel with free cancellation so you can switch if prices fall.
• Look up the public transport from the airport. It's often far cheaper than a taxi.

Many drops include a Make it a holiday section with hotel ideas and links. We sometimes earn a commission if you book through them, and it never changes which drops we send.
